Crypto.com review

4.0 Visit Crypto.com(paid link)

A full-featured exchange best known for its Visa card rewards program and wide coin selection. The app's spread-based pricing is higher than its dedicated Exchange interface, so active traders should use the Exchange for lower maker/taker fees. Not available to New York residents.

Crypto.com is one of the largest cryptocurrency platforms globally, serving over 100 million users across 90+ countries. For US buyers, the platform combines a broad selection of 400+ coins, a multi-tier Visa card rewards program backed by CRO staking, and an industry-leading suite of security certifications โ€” making it a popular all-in-one destination for buyers who want both trading and spending rewards in a single app. Like many large platforms, Crypto.com operates two distinct products: a consumer App with simple spread-based pricing, and a dedicated Exchange with a maker/taker fee structure. The App is more convenient but meaningfully more expensive; buyers who plan to trade regularly should use the Exchange to access the lower fee tiers. New York residents cannot use Crypto.com due to its absence of a NYDFS BitLicense.

Overview

Crypto.com was founded in 2016 and is headquartered in Singapore. It has grown into one of the world's largest crypto platforms by user count, surpassing 100 million registered users globally. In the US, it operates as a licensed Money Services Business registered with FinCEN and is available to residents of 49 states โ€” the sole exception being New York, where the platform has not obtained the NYDFS BitLicense required to operate legally.

This review is intended to help you decide whether Crypto.com suits your needs as a US-based crypto buyer. It is not financial advice. Cryptocurrency markets are highly volatile, and any amount you invest carries the risk of partial or total loss. Do your own research and consider your personal financial situation before committing funds.

Crypto.com offers two primary interfaces: the consumer-facing App and the dedicated Exchange. Both are tied to the same account, but they differ significantly in pricing, functionality, and intended audience. The App is designed for simplicity and integrates tightly with the Visa card and staking programs; the Exchange is an order-book platform suited to active traders. Understanding this distinction is the single most important thing a new Crypto.com user can learn before making their first purchase.

The platform supports over 400 cryptocurrencies, accepts ACH bank transfers and debit cards for US users, offers on-chain staking for dozens of assets, and provides a self-custody DeFi Wallet app for users who want to hold assets outside of Crypto.com's custody. The minimum deposit is $1, making it accessible for small initial purchases.

Fees explained

Crypto.com's fee structure depends heavily on which product you use.

The App uses spread-based pricing. When you tap "Buy" in the app, the price you are quoted already includes a spread of approximately 1โ€“2% above the mid-market rate. No separate fee line is displayed, which makes the cost less visible โ€” but it is real. On top of the spread, debit and credit card purchases incur an additional fee of approximately 2.99%. ACH bank transfer is the most cost-effective funding method for US users and avoids this card surcharge.

The Crypto.com Exchange uses a maker/taker model. At the entry tier (under $10,000 in 30-day spot volume), the Exchange charges 0.25% maker and 0.50% taker. These fees fall as your volume increases across monthly tiers and can be reduced further by staking CRO โ€” Crypto.com's native token โ€” with maker fees potentially reaching 0% at the highest CRO staking and volume tiers. For any buyer making regular purchases above small amounts, the Exchange is substantially cheaper than the App.

USD deposits via ACH are free. Wire-based USD withdrawals carry a $45 fee, which makes large fiat withdrawals relatively expensive unless you are moving significant sums where the flat fee is a small percentage. Crypto withdrawals cost the applicable network fee for the asset being withdrawn โ€” Bitcoin and Ethereum withdrawals carry a fixed fee, while some assets on low-cost networks such as Solana and Polygon are cheaper. No deposit fee applies to incoming ACH transfers.

The practical rule: use the App for convenience and card-linked spending, but switch to the Exchange for any purchase where fee efficiency matters. The gap between App and Exchange pricing is wide enough that habitual App buyers who switch can meaningfully reduce what they spend on fees over time.

Security and trust

Crypto.com's security posture is one of the strongest among major retail crypto platforms, backed by a comprehensive set of third-party certifications.

The platform holds ISO 27001 (information security management), ISO 27701 (privacy information management), ISO 27017 (cloud security), and ISO 27018 (cloud privacy) certifications. It is also SOC 2 Type II certified and compliant with PCI DSS v4.0. Crypto.com was notably the first virtual asset platform to obtain ISO 27017 and ISO 27018 certifications.

Proof of Reserves is published and user-verifiable through Crypto.com's dedicated PoR portal. The initial external attestation was conducted by Mazars Group covering major assets including Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, and CRO.

Insurance coverage includes approximately $750 million for cold-storage assets plus an additional $120 million covering institutional custody arrangements โ€” a level of coverage that compares favorably with many competing platforms.

Two-factor authentication is supported and should be enabled as a baseline security measure on any account. The platform also offers biometric login, address whitelisting for withdrawals, and anti-phishing codes in official communications.

It is worth noting that in January 2022, Crypto.com suffered a security incident in which approximately $34 million in cryptocurrency was stolen from around 400 user accounts. The company reimbursed all affected users in full. The incident led to significant security upgrades, including the mandatory withdrawal address whitelisting system. No comparable breach has been publicly reported since.

As with any custodial exchange, assets held on Crypto.com are not protected by FDIC or SIPC guarantees. For long-term holdings of significant value, transferring assets to a hardware wallet you control is worth considering regardless of which exchange you use.

Features

Beyond spot trading, Crypto.com offers a range of features that set it apart from more basic US platforms.

The Visa card program is Crypto.com's most distinctive product. Five card tiers โ€” from the free Midnight Blue (1% cashback in CRO) to the Obsidian ($400,000 CRO stake, 5% cashback) โ€” let users earn crypto rewards on everyday spending. Mid-tier cards add perks such as free Spotify and Netflix subscriptions and airport lounge access. The CRO earned as cashback is deposited automatically and adds up meaningfully for users who stake at a higher tier and use the card regularly. Note that the CRO stake required for card tiers is locked for 180 days, so consider the illiquidity of that stake before committing.

Staking is available directly in the App and Exchange for a wide range of assets. Crypto.com Earn allows users to deposit crypto for fixed or flexible terms in exchange for yield, though rates and available assets vary and are subject to change. US users should check current availability, as some earn products have historically been restricted domestically.

The Crypto.com DeFi Wallet is a separate self-custody app that gives users full control of their private keys while still integrating with the broader Crypto.com ecosystem. This is a meaningful option for users who want to hold assets without custodial risk but still want easy access to DeFi protocols.

Futures trading with up to 100x leverage is available on the Exchange, though this is subject to US regulatory restrictions and may not be available to all US users. Recurring buy scheduling is available in the App for users who want to dollar-cost average automatically.

Who it's for

Crypto.com is well suited to US buyers who want a broad selection of coins and are interested in using a crypto rewards card for everyday spending. The card program is among the most developed in the industry, and for users who can stake a moderate amount of CRO, the mid-tier cashback and perks represent genuine value.

The platform is also a reasonable choice for buyers interested in staking, who want access to a self-custody wallet in the same ecosystem, or who want exposure to a wide altcoin selection beyond what more restrictive US platforms list.

Crypto.com is less well suited to pure fee minimizers. Even using the Exchange, entry-level maker/taker rates of 0.25%/0.50% are not the lowest available among US platforms โ€” Kraken Pro, for example, offers 0.25% maker at the same tier, and rates on the taker side are comparable. Where Crypto.com wins is breadth: more coins, a card program, staking, and a DeFi wallet โ€” all in one platform.

New York residents cannot use Crypto.com at all, and should look at alternatives with a BitLicense such as Coinbase or Gemini.

How to get started

Getting started on Crypto.com takes most US users twenty to thirty minutes from sign-up to first purchase.

Download the Crypto.com App on iOS or Android, or visit crypto.com to begin on the web. Create an account with your email address and a secure password. Confirm your email to activate the account.

Complete KYC identity verification before depositing. Crypto.com requires a government-issued ID (driver's license or passport) and a selfie for identity confirmation. Verification is usually processed quickly, though peak periods can extend the wait.

Link a US bank account via ACH to fund your account. ACH deposits are free and take one to five business days to settle fully, though Instant Deposit allows you to purchase crypto immediately against incoming ACH funds up to $50,000 per day. Debit card purchases are also available in the App but carry an additional fee.

To buy crypto, use the App's simple buy for convenience, or navigate to the Exchange tab for access to the order book and lower maker/taker fees. If cost efficiency matters, spend a few minutes learning to place a limit order on the Exchange โ€” the savings versus App spreads add up quickly.

Finally, enable two-factor authentication, set an anti-phishing code in your account settings, and consider adding a withdrawal address whitelist if you plan to send crypto externally. These steps take a few minutes and significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized account activity.
